Water Bore Drilling Dubbo
A household bore in Dubbo needs a water supply work approval before anyone drills, and only an authorised driller, in a class that suits the work, may drill it. Tell us what the bore is for and where it would go, and your enquiry goes to one local provider, who prices the job in writing.

Four things to know first
- Approval comes before the drill The NSW Department says a water supply work approval is needed to construct a groundwater bore, including a household bore, and its 2016 fact sheet says that approval must be obtained before any drilling occurs.
- Only an authorised driller may drill The same fact sheet says you are responsible for making sure the driller holds a current NSW authority, in a class that suits the type of drilling. It lists six classes.
- A household bore needs no water entitlement Basic landholder rights let owners and occupiers take water for household use and non-intensive stock watering without a water access entitlement. The bore itself still needs its approval.
- Bore water is untreated NSW Health advises that water used for drinking, cooking and personal hygiene should be tested and treated, and the Department puts the responsibility for that on the person taking the water.
Three steps
From enquiry to quote
- Tell us about the bore What it is for, where on the property it would go, and whether there is a bore on the property already.
- It is passed on Your enquiry goes to one independent local provider covering Dubbo and the surrounding district. The provider pays for the introduction; you never do.
- A provider inspects and quotes The provider looks at the site and prices the work in writing. The price is theirs to set.
Water Bore Drilling across the Dubbo Regional Council area
Around Dubbo a new bore draws on water that other people depend on. The NSW Government's 2012 background document to the Macquarie Bogan water sharing plan says many towns, Dubbo, Geurie, Mumbil and Wellington among them, obtain some or all of their water supply from groundwater in the alluvial water sources. Three pages follow the plan documents into Dubbo, Geurie and Wellington, one recorded fact each, and the article on the Dubbo record shows why the date on a source matters.
